Simple and intuitive: 36x24mm Full-Frame Sensor for Cinema:
From full-frame 24mm-height anamorphic and spherical to Super35 18mm-height formats, VENICE allows for a wide variety of aspect ratios such as 1.85:1, 2.39:1, 17:9, and beyond.
To meet diverse production needs, Sony offers a modular licensing system, allowing users to unlock advanced features like 4K anamorphic and 6K full-frame only when required—providing a camera that adapts to your workflow, not the other way around.
Developed through close collaboration with cinematographers, the VENICE Digital Motion Picture Camera is designed to capture breathtaking visuals across a wide range of formats—including full-frame 36x24mm, Super35, and Anamorphic. Its exceptional image quality has earned it certification for the 'Filmed in IMAX' program, recognizing its ability to meet the highest cinematic standards. The program ensures that productions using VENICE can fully optimize the camera’s capabilities, aligning with IMAX’s exclusive post-production workflow and expanded aspect ratio to deliver the ultimate immersive experience.
The CBK-3620XS VENICE Extension System 2 brings a new level of shooting versatility—without compromising image quality. Built specifically for the VENICE 2, it supports the full power of its 8K sensor, offering increased bandwidth, double the cable length (up to 12 meters) without needing a repeater, added control buttons, and an integrated gyro sensor for enhanced data capture.
This system includes a front panel cover, an image sensor block case, and your choice of 3m or 12m extension cables. Fully compatible with VENICE 2 (both 8K and 6K sensors) and the original VENICE—when using the latest firmware—it delivers advanced functionality like gyro metadata and four assignable buttons, empowering filmmakers with more freedom and precision on set.
With the optional High Frame Rate (HFR) license, VENICE unlocks impressive slow-motion capabilities—capturing up to 120fps at 4K 2.39:1 and 60fps at 6K 3:2. It also supports a range of other formats, including 110fps at 4K 17:9, 90fps at 6K 2.39:1, 72fps at both 6K 17:9 and 6K 1.85:1, and 75fps at 4K 4:3 when paired with the anamorphic license. This flexibility gives filmmakers the creative freedom to explore high-speed cinematography with stunning clarity and detail.
VENICE’s high-speed sensor readout significantly reduces the rolling shutter, or "jello" effect, commonly associated with CMOS sensors—ensuring smoother, distortion-free motion capture even during fast camera moves or quick pans.
With over 15 stops of dynamic range and remarkably low noise, VENICE delivers stunning image quality in every lighting condition—from harsh sunlight to near darkness. Its real-world performance shines in High Dynamic Range (HDR) workflows, offering filmmakers exceptional detail, tonal depth, and unmatched flexibility in color grading for truly cinematic results.
VENICE surpasses the Rec. 2020 color space, offering a wider gamut than DCI-P3 to faithfully reproduce the true colors of your scene with exceptional richness and accuracy. Combined with Sony’s third-generation S-Log3 gamma and ultra-wide color space, it provides a powerful foundation for color grading—delivering a broad, flexible palette within an established and trusted post-production workflow.
VENICE features a dual base ISO system designed for maximum flexibility on set. The standard base ISO of 500 delivers optimal dynamic range for controlled lighting environments, while the High Base ISO of 2500 is tailored for low-light and HDR scenarios. It offers an impressive exposure latitude of 6 stops over and 9 stops under 18% gray—totaling 15 stops of dynamic range.
When paired with VENICE’s built-in eight-step Optical ND filter system, ISO 2500 allows you to simulate various ISO settings without sacrificing image quality. This powerful combination effectively lets you operate VENICE as an ISO1250 camera, giving cinematographers precision control across any lighting condition.
PL Lens Mount: VENICE is equipped with an industry-standard PL mount, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of Super35 and full-frame PL lenses—both spherical and anamorphic. The mount also features integrated contacts supporting Cooke/i Technology, enabling real-time lens data capture. This metadata is recorded frame by frame, streamlining post-production and enhancing VFX, grading, and on-set monitoring workflows.
Lever Lock Type E-Mount: VENICE offers flexibility beyond PL lenses with support for Sony’s expanding ecosystem of E-mount lenses. Using third-party adapters, you can also access a wide variety of SLR and rangefinder lenses. The E-mount features a secure lever-lock mechanism, ideal for larger lenses, often eliminating the need to remove lens support rigs during swaps. Transitioning from PL to E-mount is quick and easy—just remove six hex screws. Plus, iris control on E-mount lenses is accessible via assignable buttons, ensuring smooth, efficient operation on set.
VENICE’s support for anamorphic lenses combined with its ability to shoot 4:3 and 6:5 aspect ratio at a horizontal resolution of 4K allows the capture of breathtakingly beautiful images with stunning lens flare, bokeh and emotional impact.
VENICE captures breathtaking full 6K resolution, recording directly in X-OCN—Sony’s 16-bit eXtended tonal range Original Camera Negative format—for maximum image quality and grading flexibility. Additionally, XAVC 4K can be recorded onto SxS cards, all while utilizing the full 6K sensor readout, ensuring rich detail and high-fidelity imagery in any workflow.
VENICE is built with a rugged chassis, meticulously engineered to withstand the toughest shooting environments. Its advanced ventilation system is fully isolated from internal electronics, protecting against dust, sand, and moisture. Designed with practicality in mind, the quiet-running fan can be easily cleaned or replaced on set—ensuring reliable performance without interrupting production.
